Introduction:

A long awaited easy kids game, the likes of which we've not seen since I spent a Night in the Museum (2) which involved My Horse and Me (2). This just misses the mark of an under 5hr easy 1000 points but is close enough to justify a rental.

It's quite a fun game, which may even encourage you to watch the movie! There's the dreaded collectibles to consider which may leave a nasty taste in the mouth but don't let them put you off.

Quickie Roadmap:

Fire up the game on Hard straight away. There's nothing hard about it all, in fact, I struggle to imagine how easy "easy" might be as I never played it that way. Seriously, hard is actually very easy and by the time you've finished the game you'll have roughly 765 points before you replay any levels or grind out the collect X amount of Sheriffs Stars.

When you've netted your respectable 765 points then it's a question of going back over levels to find missed collectibles and gather together enough stars to max out your upgrades. As soon as all abilities/weapons are upgraded and you've collected all of the collectibles then you'll pop another 125 points bringing you up to 890. The remaining 100 or so points are mainly from accumulating 200,000 sheriffs stars.

Accumulating the Sheriff's Stars can be done two ways. You can either continue the game when you've finished it on hard or replay tale to rinse and repeat accumulating stars. If you want to go back through the whole game again make sure you "continue" and DON'T start a new game. By continuing the game all of your stats will follow with you.

FAQ:

Do I need to save all of my Sheriff's Stars to hit the 100/150/200 thousand?

No, definitely not. You can spend them on upgrades as you wish. The game records the total accumulated regardless.

The achievement for completing it on hard for 125 points mentions all unlocks & all collectibles but what exactly does that refer to?

The "unlocks" are do with upgrading all of weapons/abilities. Through the game there'll be a character/shop you can visit to purchase these upgrades using your sheriff's stars. The collectibles are rock piles and fish bowls located in each level. Rock piles produce sheriff's stars after you use your pickaxe to mine them. Fish bowls are just there to be collected.

Collectibles

The rock piles are easy to spot and emit shiny gold rays. Fish bowls are fairly large and contain a hapless fishy. You're looking at an average of 4 of each in each level. They are easy to spot and without a guide I managed to find say 95% without trying too hard. It's the old adage of rotate the camera have a look around, when you drop into a new area check behind you. There's one sneaky one in the level Land of Giants. You immediately start in front of an air duct  turn around and go inside and turn left and there is a fish bowl hiding in there.

ACHIEVEMENT GUIDE

Honorable Cowboy - 5 points

Defeat a shooter without using your gun

Potentially your first achievement. In the first level there’s a cut scene with Bad Bill. You are given your gun and then must use it to aim and fire at him using RT . Once done, he forces his henchmen on you. Just roll using B and melee at least one of them with X

Three Sevens - 10 points

Collect 1000 Sheriff Stars

Scattered across each level are crates, barrels, enemies and rock piles. Destroying each of them will net you Sheriff Stars. You’ll hit this achievement early on bearing in mind that by the time you’ve finished the game you’ll be close to 100,000 of them! Another tip is to use X to melee the enemies whenever possible. Doing so produces a higher yield of stars (according to the games tutorial in the first level).

Clay Pigeon - 15 points

Launch an enemy with an uppercut then shoot him three times

This is a little tricky at first but easy when you start to manage the controls. Holding RB and then pressing X produces an uppercut. When the enemy is up in the air, blast him with your gun using RT. The game uses a default auto-aim so you shouldn’t have trouble targeting him when he’s in the air.

Taking Aim - 15 points

Defeat 20 enemies using manual aim

You can get this in the first level easy. As soon as you have your gun use LB to manually aim. The reticule will turn red when the enemy is in range so just fire away with RT . If you start using this early in level 1, you’ll have the achievement 2/3rds of the way through.

Bull's Eye! - 10 points

Hit a bullseye in Golden Bullet mode for the first time

First opportunity to get this comes at the end of level 1. You defeat Bad Bill and there’s a cut scene to follow. The cut scene is activated when you press Y next to a floating golden bullet. You fire the bullet in ‘slow mo’ vision in order to hit bulls-eye targets. This happens in nearly all levels throughout the game. You can’t progress without hitting the target so if you fail it automatically restarts the cut scene.

It's Not Easy Being Green - 20 points

Complete a tale without dying

Best done on the very first level. It’s the shortest and the easiest because it acts as a tutorial so is a little more forgiving in terms of the number of enemies and chances to get yourself killed! You might think you’ll struggle if you’re going for the ‘manual aim’ achievement but just be careful and remember – even on hard the ‘health drops’ from downed enemies are plentiful. In fact, the game seems to detect when you’re low on health and so the next drop from an enemy will be a health token.

Homesteader - 20 points

Complete Jenkins Cousins' Homestead

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed.

Meep! Meep! - 30 points

Ride a roadrunner for an entire level without dying

At the start of the second level you chase Bad Bill to the Water Train using a Roadrunner. The scene is not that long and you’re crossing the terrain. Just keep an eye out for fences or rocks blocking your way which you must shoot or jump respectively. If you do die, don’t worry, you can come back to this at the end of the game using ‘replay tale.’

McClane Worthy - 10 points

Escape the exploding train in Water Train

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed.

A Tommy Gun! - 15 points

Acquire the Blaster and take out 10 enemies with it

See 'I Got a Present For Ya!' achievement

Spread the Love - 15 points

Acquire the Spreadshot and take out 10 enemies with it

See 'I Got a Present For Ya!' achievement

I Got a Present For Ya! - 15 points

Acquire the Launcher and take out 10 enemies with it

There are three weapons that can only be used after you open a jack-in-the-box. These boxes appear throughout the game, usually where there’s about to be a big battle. Melee or shoot open the box to reveal one of the three weapons.

Each weapon only lasts for a limited time. Without upgrading the weapons in the ‘upgrade screen’ you’ll struggle to kill 10 enemies in the time allowed. Concentrate on upgrading one of the weapons and you’ll be sure to pop one of the three or perhaps two out of the three by the time you’ve completed the game. As you ‘replay tales’ or do another run through to collect Sheriff Stars you’ll be able to finish upgrading the last weapon.

Good Air Day - 10 points

Launch 10 enemies off the train in Water Train

Plenty of opportunity to do this on the train. The best part is at the very end when you face Bad Bill with his dynamite. The enemies on the train seem to spawn endlessly until you’ve defeated Bad Bill so use this opportunity to launch the remaining number of enemies of the train that you need. Best to use RB and X to perform an uppercut to get them clear of the barriers.

They Got a Pill For That - 5 points

Shoot Bad Bill's dynamite bundle before he throws it in Water Train

The last scene on the Train is a battle with Bad Bill. He holds a stick of dynamite above his head. Use manual aim (LB) and then use RT to shoot it out of his hands. If you don’t succeed, throw yourself off the train and you’ll start the scene again.

Thirsty Work - 20 points

Defeat Bad Bill in Water Train

Keep shooting the dynamite out of Bad Bill’s hands and it will reduce his health. Takes 5 or 6 attempts.

Train Surfer - 20 points

Complete Water Train

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed

100% Bull - 25 points

Hit 3 bulls-eyes in a row

If you didn’t do this on the first level, the next opportunity is on the Water Train. You use the slow mo bullet to bounce of three targets. To progress you must hit all three but not necessarily the bulls-eye. If you’re going for the achievement and miss any of the bulls-eyes then allow the next bullet to miss and the game will restart the scene. Use left thumb stick to steer the bullet.

Tank Buster - 30 points

Defeat a huge charging rabbit using only melee attacks, without taking any damage from him

First opportunity is on the third mission – Forbidden Mine. Use B to roll out of his way when he charges. He will get stunned and use can then use X to melee him before he tries to charge you again. Rinse and repeat until he dies and the achievement is yours. If you don’t succeed there’s plenty of other ‘rabbits’ in the game from this point onwards.

Crate Hate - 5 points

Smash open 250 crates

Unless you purposefully avoid the crates and barrels, you’ll pop this somewhere around the third mission.

Blue Sevens - 15 points

Collect 10 000 Sheriff Stars

See Red, White & Blue Sevens achievement

Sting Like a Bee - 10 points

Defeat 100 enemies with melee attacks

Use X to melee as mentioned above. I managed to get this on the Water Train mission.

Around the Bowl - 20 points

Defeat Bad Bill in Forbidden Mine

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed

Forty Niner - 20 points

Complete The Forbidden Mine

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed

The Cleaner - 15 points

Defeat 500 enemies

There’s plenty of enemies throughout the game. I got this in the Land of the Giants level.

The Bigger They Are - 20 points

Defeat Lars in Land of Giants

A certain points in the game a golf set suddenly appears and you can take a swing with an explosive ball/bomb to either open/drop bridge, kill zombies, or like here, hit the Giant. Pressing A launches the ball and you can then steer it with the left or right thumb stick. Aim for the Giant’s face each time. Should pop after three hits.

Fee! Fie! Foe! Fum! - 20 points

Complete Land of Giants

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed.

Demolitions - 15 points

Lure a Jumper to land on a shotgun shell

Sometimes located near crates, you will come across three shotgun shells standing upright. If you shoot/hit them they explode, destroying enemies, crates and damaging your health if you’re too close.

One of the enemies you face is a rabbit (not the giant ones). They stand still for a little time before jumping in the air. Where they are going to land is targeted with a large white circle with an image of a rabbit in the middle. You need to get out of the way before they land on that spot.

So, before they jump, move over to one of shotgun shells and wait for the target to appear then move! The Jumper will land on the shotgun shells and kill himself in the process.

Who's Bad Now? - 20 points

Defeat Bad Bill in Rodent Clan

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed.

The Cooler King - 20 points

Complete Rodent Clan

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed.

Rock and Roll Cowboy - 10 points

Survive the crumbling canyon in The Return of Rattlesnake Jake

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed. You’ll probably die once or twice until you figure out which parts of the canyon don’t crumble away i.e. the proper route you’re supposed to take.

Snake Charmer - 20 points

Defeat Rattlesnake Jake in The Return of Rattlesnake Jake

End boss battle. Be ready for him to slam his body down but rolling out of the way. Target his head when he is upright and eventually he will come crashing down in a daze. Shoot or melee his head when he is down and dazed. Rinse and repeat 5 or 6 times to defeat him.

Saint Patty - 20 points

Complete The Return of Rattlesnake Jake

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed

Widow Maker - 25 points

Defeat 1000 enemies

Easy done by the time you’ve finished the game. I got this shortly after “The Return of Rattlesnake Jake”.

I Shot the Sheriff - 15 points

Defeat 6 zombies with one golf shot

There’s one opportunity for this on Zombie Invasion. Right at the end many zombies spawn and try to attack a gate between you and them. You’re up a height and use the golf-club ball/bomb weapon to kill as many as you can before they bring down the gate. They all bunch up so it’s probably harder not to kill 6 in one go!

Gun Happy - 20 points

Complete a tale using only your gun

Avoid using melee, even to brake open the crates and barrels. I managed to get this on the Zombie Invasion level.

Clatto Verata N - 20 points

Complete Zombie Invasion

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed.

This is Bat Country! - 30 points

Ride a bat for an entire level without dying

Similar to riding the Roadrunner but a little harder. Avoid barriers, steam vents, etc as you steer your bat through the level. I managed to get killed the first time I tried because I couldn’t quite make out the steam that was coming out of certain pipes plus I concentrated too much on trying to kill the other flying enemies. On a second attempt I pretty much ignored the other enemies because they eventually die off by hitting obstacles etc.

Curiouser and Curiouser - 20 points

Complete Nowhere & Back

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed.

Thorough Examination - 20 points

Defeat the Alien Probe in Alien Showdown

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed.

Why Can't We All Just Get Along? - 20 points

Complete Alien Showdown

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed.

Hero of Dirt - 30 points

Complete the game in medium mode

This is a story related achievement and cannot be missed. If you played through on hard this one will pop at the same time.

White Sevens - 20 points

Collect 100 000 Sheriff Stars

See Red, White & Blue Sevens achievement

Red Sevens - 25 points

Collect 150 000 Sheriff Stars

See Red, White & Blue Sevens achievement

Red, White & Blue Sevens - 50 points

Collect 200 000 Sheriff Stars

By the time I finished the game on hard, I still did not have enough for 100,000 stars. You can either ‘continue the game’ and go through it all again or grind out replaying the first level/tale. It’s the shortest level and if you run through until the first ever jack-in-the-box room and then clear that out you’ll be close if not over 10,000 stars.

As soon as the room is clear hit the back button and choose to replay the tale. Keep going until you’ve hit 200,000. You will need to do some grinding anyway in order to upgrade all of your abilities/weapons which counts towards the Legend of the West achievement.

Hero of the West - 60 points

Complete the game in hard mode

Easy peasy as some might say.

Legend of the West - 125 points

Complete hard mode and gather all unlocks & all collectibles

See the Roadmap above. Unlocks are the abilities/weapon upgrades. It might also be referring to the concept art, enemy biographies but they automatically unlock when you complete each level so don’t worry about those.

Collectables are the fish bowls and rock piles. They are easy to spot and you can check on your progress using the start button. When you chapter select, the menu screen also confirms how many you’ve collected.

Finally, you don’t have to have unlocked everything, collected all collectibles and finish the hard mode in one go. Like I say, I completed it on hard, used chapter select to find the last of the collectibles then grinded out the first level to max my upgrades and then the achievement popped – recognising that I had already finished the game on hard.
