DefaultNHL 2K9 Achievement Guide

NHL 2K9 Achievement Guide

Time To 1k - 15-20 Hours (approximate)
Ease Of Game - 4/10 (Quite manageable, patience required for a couple of achievements)
Total Number Of People Needed To Boost Online Achievements - 2

NHL 2K9 is another grindfest from 2K Sports, fairly easy but somewhat time consuming and boring. You can use two controllers (three are recommended) to make the games go easier for you, as well as being able to adjust all the difficulty levels and AI sliders to your advantage and no achievements will be affected.

Notes:
*To check your progress towards wins, goals, assists, etc, go to Features / Trophy Room / then press Y to bring up your stats

*Modes that count toward 150 games, 1000 goals, 1500 assists, etc etc - Quick Match, Franchise, and Online Quick Ranked Matches (you must finish the Online Ranked Match for it to count. If someone quits out it doesn't count as a game played)

*Most of the achievements unlock in game the second you meet the qualifications for them. Achievements such as winning X amount of games or scoring X amount of goals will not unlock until after the game has ended

*I highly recommend you go for every single achievement in the game first before worrying about 1000 goals, 150 wins, and 1500 assists. These should be the last three achievements you get in the game

5 Goals (5g) - Achieve a total of 5 User Goals.
See 100 Goals achievement for more information

25 Goals (10g) - Achieve a total of 25 User Goals.
See 100 Goals achievement for more information

75 Goals (20g) - Achieve a total of 75 User Goals.
See 100 Goals achievement for more information

150 Goals (40g) - Achieve a total of 150 User Goals.
See 100 Goals achievement for more information

1000 Goals (100g) - Achieve a total of 1000 User Goals.
Score 1,000 goals for this to unlock. The best way to do this is start a quick game with three controllers (plugged in if possible so they don't time out and turn off). Have your main profile on one team, and the other two on the opposing side.

When the game begins, have one of the opposing controllers go into Options / Controller Setup and press Y to bring up a submenu. From there put player lock to Goalie, this will mean the controller will always be the goalie. Also turn Crease Control to "Off". Then put a rubber band around the Left Analog Stick so it tilts to the far left or right, this will mean the goalie will always move away from the net. Now simply score with your main profile as much as possible in the now empty goal.

You'll want to average around 7 goals a game so you have the full 1000 goals by the time you win 150 games for the 150 Games won achievement

Note: you can also pull the goalie by holding the both Triggers down and pressing the Back Button, but after a goal is scored he will come back and you'll have to do it again. The rubber band method will save you from having to constantly be holding buttons down during a match

10 Assists (5g) - Achieve a total of 10 User Assists.
See 1500 Assists achievement for more information

40 Assists (10g) - Achieve a total of 40 User Assists.
See 1500 Assists achievement for more information

100 Assists (20g) - Achieve a total of 100 User Assists.
See 1500 Assists achievement for more information

200 Assists (40g) - Achieve a total of 200 User Assists.
See 1500 Assists achievement for more information

1500 Assists (100g) -Achieve a total of 1500 User Assists.
An assist is when you pass the puck to another player and he scores. You can pass to two different people and then score, thus you can get a total of two assists per goal. Just make sure on your way to 1000 goals you are passing to two different players before scoring and you will have this around the same time 1000 goals unlocks

10 PIMs (5g) - Achieve a total of 10 User PIMs (Penalties in Minutes).
See 500 PIMs achievement for more information

50 PIMs (10g) - Achieve a total of 50 User PIMs (Penalties in Minutes).
See 500 PIMs achievement for more information

100 PIMs (20g) - Achieve a total of 100 User PIMs (Penalties in Minutes).
See 500 PIMs achievement for more information

150 PIMs (40g) - Achieve a total of 150 User PIMs (Penalties in Minutes).
See 500 PIMs achievement for more information

500 PIMs (100g) - Achieve a total of 500 User PIMs (Penalties in Minutes).
Penalties In Minutes are when you get called for hitting your opponent illegally or tripping him or various other infractions. Go into Options / NHL Rules and move the sliders on all Penalties to 100. Also turn Custom Penalty Length on and set the timer to 0:06. This will GREATLY speed up you getting this achievement, as the in game clock will still show 2:00 but in reality it's only 6 seconds per penalty so you will rack up the minutes very fast this way.

Note: this is one of the achievements you will want to get out of the way first, because everytime you get called for a penalty it stops the game and makes the game that much longer towards hitting 150 games. Once you get this achievement, turn all penalties OFF so you don't have to worry about game stoppage anymore.

1 Win (5g) - Achieve a total of 1 User Wins.
See 150 Wins achievement for more information

15 Wins (10g) - Achieve a total of 15 User Wins.
See 150 Wins achievement for more information

50 Wins (20g) - Achieve a total of 50 User Wins.

See 150 Wins achievement for more information

100 Wins (40g) - Achieve a total of 100 User Wins.
See 150 Wins achievement for more information

150 Wins (100g) - Achieve a total of 150 User Wins.
Win 150 games. The easiest way is play Quick Games set to one minute periods, using multiple controllers so you can easily score and win

Powerplay Specialist (20g) - Score three Powerplay goals in one game.
A powerplay goal is when the opposing team commits a penalty against you and they get a man sent off, giving your team a man advantage over them and giving you a two minute time frame to try to score. Scoring within the two minutes counts as a powerplay goal, score a total of three of these in one game to unlock the achievement

The easiest way to get this is with multiple controllers, have a player on the opposing team go behind one of your players and press either Y or Right Bumper until they get called for the penalty and sent away. Now simply score while they're gone

Note: Make sure when you go for this that you have Penalties on, all Penalty Sliders set to 100, and your Custom Penalty Length set to the full 2 minutes

Boom Goes the Dynamite (10g) - Score a goal from behind the blue line.
You must score a goal from behind the blue line near the center of the ice. Using two controllers, pull the opposing goalie by holding down both Triggers and pressing the Back Button. Now have one of your players stand behind the blue line and keep shooting the puck at the now empty goal until you make it

Kill It (10g) - Kill a full 2 minute 5 on 3 powerplay.
Killing a 5 on 3 powerplay is when your team has had two men sent off for committing penalites, and the opponent has a two minute time frame to try to score on you. Using two controllers, have two players on your team commit penalties until they're both sent away. Now simply have the opposing team sit there, making sure they don't score, until the achievement unlocks

Note: Make sure when you go for this that you have Penalties on, all Penalty Sliders set to 100, and your Custom Penalty Length set to the full 2 minutes

Skillful Skater (10g) - Score a goal after performing a 1-on-1 deke special move.
A deke is when you have the puck and are advancing towards the goal with a defender in your way, and then do an agile move to skate past him and score. To do a deke hold down the Left Bumper until your player does a full spin and then press X to shoot. As long as you score the achievement will unlock, but you might have to repeat this several times as the achievement doesn't always like to unlock on the first try

This is best done using multiple controllers. Have the opponent's goalie set to a controller and move him out of the way so you can score easier. You can also use other controllers to control the defenders so they won't interefere with your deke.

Masterful Scorer (10g) - Score a goal using a goalie deke special move.
This is very similar to the Skillful Skater achievement, only you must use the new control scheme to score. During a game go to Options / Controller Setup and then press the Right Trigger to change the controls to Hybrid.

Again hold the Left Bumper until your player does a full spin and this time press the Right Analog Stick in the direction of the net to shoot and score. Again you may have to repeat this several times as it doesn't always want to unlock despite you doing it correctly

This is best done using multiple controllers. Have the opponent's goalie set to a controller and move him out of the way so you can score easier. You can also use other controllers to control the defenders so they won't interefere with your deke.

Wraparound (5g) - Score on a wraparound goal.
A wraparound goal is when you have the puck behind the opponent's net and move just around the corner of the netpost to score. This is best done with multiple controllers, first you will want to pull the opponent's goalie so the net is empty. Then stand behind the net with puck, move towards one of the net corners and press X. Your player should do a quick little move and fire the puck around the post into the net.

This is another scoring achievement that won't always unlock on the first attempt, keep trying until it does

Ride the Zamboni (40g) - Win the Zamboni mini-game.
By far the most frustrating achievement in this game. When you are playing a game, after every period you have the option to press X to play the "Ride The Zamboni" mini-game. This game has you riding the zamboni, trying to clean 100% of the ice within 3 minutes.

The frustration is trying to get all 100% while dealing with the zamboni's very poor controls and turning. This YouTube Video is an EXCELLENT visual guide on how to hit 100%, I recommend studying it well until you have the technique memorized.

Basically you want to drive in a clockwise manner, doing a lap around the rink, then another inner lap, then drawing a line down the middle of the rink cutting it in half. From here, you want to drive on the outer edge of one half to the inner edge of the other, continuing this pattern until almost the entire rink is cleaned. There will invariably be a few missed spots while you do this, doing clean up on them should net you the 100%.

This will likely take many tries to get the full 100, as it is very easy to get 99.5% or so before time runs out. Just keep at this on your way to 150 wins

Marty Turco (10g) - Get a shutout with Marty Turco in net while facing a minimum of 20 shots.
Marty Turco is the starting goalie for the Dallas Stars. A shutdown is when you win the game without the other team scoring a single goal. This is an achievement best done in Quick Game using two controllers, for you team pick the Dallas Stars and for the opponent choose a team with a poorly rated offense.

Controlling the opponent, take the puck and go to at least the center of the rink and lightly tap X to fire a weak shot at Turco. Once he has blocked or saved 20 of these without a single one going in, retake the puck with your main profile and score against your opponents. Then just sit there with both teams until the game ends and the achievement will unlock. If the opponent does happen to score simply quit the game and select rematch to try again

Jason Spezza (10g) - Get at least 6 points with Jason Spezza in a single game.
Jason Spezza is the starting center for the Ottawa Senators. In hockey, you can get points by either scoring goals or getting an assist. As long as you get a total of six points by either scoring six goals or a combination of goals and assists this achievement wil unlock

Joe Thornton (10g) - Get at least 2 goals, 3 assists and 4 PIMs with Joe Thornton in a single game.
Joe Thornton is the starting center for the San Jose Sharks. In one game, score two goals, pass for three assists, and rack up at least four minutes in the penalty box and this achievement will unlock

Rick Nash (10g) - Get at least 3 points and a shootout goal in a win with Rick Nash.
Rick Nash is the starting Left Winger for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Make sure you have the game set to NHL 4-4 Shootout for Overtime Type before you try for this achievement. This is another achievement you will want to do with two controllers. First off, score 3 points with Rick Nash either with goals or assists. Second, score 3 goals with the other team so the game is tied, then sit there until regulation time ends in the third period. There will be a brief overtime period, but again just sit there with both teams.

Now the Shootout will begin, where each team has three attempts to score a goal in a 1 on 1 against the goalie. Rick Nash will be first for your team, move the opponent goalie out of the way and make sure you score. Make the opponents miss everytime they face your goalie, and keep scoring with your other players. As long as Rick Nash has three points, scored a Shootout goal, and your team won the game this achievement will unlock

Undisputed Champion (45g) - Win the Presidents' Trophy and Stanley Cup in a single season.
This achievement can only be earned in Franchise Mode. The President's Trophy is awarded to the team who scored the most points in one season, and the Stanley Cup is given to the winner of the NHL playoffs. The easiest way to do this is start a franchise and pick whatever team you want. Before you begin the franchise make sure you have the salary cap set to ignore, forced trades turned on, and injuries turned off. Now trade away every single player on your team with stats below 85 for a player on a different team with stats above 85. This will give you a super team, also adjust sliders in your favour to make them more powerful. Save the franchise before going any further.

Now simply sim to the end of the season and then sim the playoffs. As long as you have a team of players all rated in the 90s they will score the most points of any team and win the Stanley Cup in the playoffs.

If you don't get the achievement, reload your save and sim the season again. You can also sim on a game by game basis, saving after each win, but honestly with a super team of traded players you shouldn't have to worry about this

Note: I recommend doing this with the Vancouver Canucks and making sure you keep the starting Left Winger Daniel Sedin, as you can use him for the Lumberjack achievement

Reel Him In (15g) - Resign a Superstar (95+ overall) to your team.
After you earn the Undisputed Champion achievement, continue on with your franchise until you get to the Offseason and the Contract Negotiations section. You should have several players with a rating over 95, make one of them an offer to resign them and when one of them accepts the achievement will unlock

Lumberjack (15g) - Get a hat trick with a player that's fully-bearded in the
Stanley Cup playoffs.

This achievement can only be earned in Franchise Mode. A hat trick is when a single player scores 3 goals in one game. To get this achievement, all you have to do is get a hat trick during any playoff game in Franchise Mode.

I recommend using the Vancouver Canucks to make the playoffs, and then scoring three goals with their starting Left Winger Daniel Sedin. Or if you want you can create a player with a full beard and assign him to the team of your choice

Team 2K (20g) - Beat a Team 2K member or someone that has unlocked this achievement in an online game.
This achievement can only be earned in Ranked Quick Game mode under the Xbox Live menu. You need to beat someone that has the Team 2K Viral achievement in a FULL game, quitting does not count.

Once you find a person who has this viral achievement, search for each other in the Ranked Quick Game mode. Since this game is very dead online, you should have no problems finding each other. Beat them in a game and the achievement should unlock when the game ends

Note: this achievement is VERY glitchy and often will not unlock even though you've beaten a person with the viral. The only advice is keep trying to play games against them, on different days even, and it should eventually unlock

Good Teammate (20g) - Average an A teammate grade.
From the main menu go to Xbox Live / Ranked Team Up. You will need a boosting partner for this match, have them meet you in the Team-Up lobby and start the match.

To get this achievement, you must average an A teammate grade in this mode. You get an A grade by scoring, winning faceoffs, making good passes, getting good hits, anything positive to help your team win. You lose grade points by committing penalties, losing faceoffs, playing bad defense, anything negative that helps your team lose. You will want your boosting partner to pretty much just sit there and pull their goalie while you score on them as much as you can.

If neither of you have never played Ranked Team Up before, both of your grades will be F. As long as the person who is going to win first gets an A in their first game, the achievement will unlock for them. The other person's grade will sufer, and you'll both have to keep playing games letting the other person keep getting A's until their overall grade finally averages out to A. It is ideal to find a boosting partner who already has this achievement or has a secondary account they don't care about so you don't have to keep playing online games to get their grade up

Note: this achievement can be rather glitchy as to when it unlocks. If it doesn't unlock for you despite getting an A Grade, exit out to the main menu and then return to Xbox Live and view your 2K Profile. It should unlock there if it hasn't by now

Alter Ego (20g) - Customize your Online Avatar.
From the main menu go to Xbox Live / Online Features / My Avatar. Simply choose an avatar and press Start for the achievement to unlock

Critic (20g) - Download and rate a reel from ReelViewer.
From the main menu go to Features / 2K Reelmaker / Reelviewer. From here you can choose a Reel Video from several menus, it doesn't matter which you pick. Download it, save it to your hard drive, then back out to the Saved Reels menu and watch it. After watching it, you get the option to rate it. Rate it however you like, the achievement will pop right after you cast your vote

Nice guide again here. I did hear that for the Team A grade you can just spend the game passing around so like player one just passes for period one, player 2 for period 2 and as long as you go into overtime you get the grade. I can't confirm this though.

Also curses to the viral just it sucks so bad =(

IIRC, you could only do that in NHL 2k10. I seem to remember in 2K9 trying that with my friend but you were locked onto your position so passing to an AI player meant you lost control of the puck and even pressing A to call for a pass wouldn't work.

1000 goals, 1500 Assists?? I thought 894 goals was bad.

Another impressive guide YouStayClassy!

Thanks!

But yeah, it's just HORRID grinding some of this stuff out in these 2K Sports NHL games. No one, and I mean NO ONE, in the world is as happy as I am that NHL 2K11 for the 360 was cancelled. Just typing that brings a smile to my face.

NHL 2K11 is still coming out, but only for the Wii I'm fairly sure. 360 and PS3 iterations were cancelled. Originally it was the title was cancelled for ALL consoles, but I guess they figured Wii owners can't get enough of horribly controlling games so might as well clog the bargain bin with another one.
