This is a very easy game to play as all you have to do is point and click. If you never have played the original, than I strongly suggest using a walkthrough, otherwise it could become very time consuming as the cut scenes can be quite long and you need to know what to pick up.
A walkthrough will also make it possible to complete the game in one playthrough as there are quite a few miss-able achievements. I used this guide from GameFAQ by bananagirl (for the PC) but it is still relevant.
ACHIEVEMENT GUIDE
The Three Trials - 25 points
Completed Part One: The Three Trials. Guybrush proved himself worthy to be a pirate
This is the longest chapter, but this achievement is story related, so it cannot be missed.
The Journey - 25 points
Complete Part Two: The Journey. Guybrush used a voodoo spell to travel to Monkey Island
This achievement is story related, so it cannot be missed.
Under Monkey Island - 25 points
Completed Part Three: Under Monkey Island. Guybrush traveled into the Monkey Head and got the root
This achievement is story related, so it cannot be missed.
Guybrush Kicks Butt - 45 points
Completed Last Part: Guybrush Kicks Butt. Guybrush stopped LeChuck from marrying Elaine Marley
This achievement is story related, so it cannot be missed.
Old School - 5 points
Experienced the original, classic adventure game, as it was in the early 90s.
Just click the BACK button anytime during the game, and it will go into Classic Mode i.e old school early 90's graphics.
Ten Minutes Later... - 10 points
Guybrush can hold his breath for 10 minutes, but not any longer than that.
After you have stolen the idol from the mansion (first chapter) you will find yourself on the dock with Fester Shinetop, who will tie you to the idol and throw you into the ocean. SAVE your game here before he throws you in (because this is the only place you can die and you will have to reload)
Once he throws you in, wait ten minutes and the achievement will unlock. Then reload your save to continue.
Sharp Tongue - 15 points
Guybrush learned all of the insults, and is the wittiest / deadliest pirate what ever swung a sword
Once you have been trained in sword fighting, go to the 'Fork' on the map and wait for pirates to approach you. When they attack say "My name is Guybrush Threepwood. Prepare to die" and this will initiate a response. This walkthrough also has a guide at the end on the 'art' of sword fighting.
There are 16 insults you need to collect by giving the right comebacks.
Insult: This is the END for you, you gutter-crawling cur!
Comeback: And I've got a little TIP for you, get the POINT?
Insult: Soon you'll be wearing my sword like a shish kebab!
Comeback: First you better stop waiving it like a feather-duster.
Insult: My handkerchief will wipe up your blood!
Comeback: So you got that job as janitor, after all.

Marooned Everyone - 10 points
Re-marooned Herman Toothrot and marooned Carla, Otis and Meathook on Monkey Island
You need to complete both endings for this to unlock. When you reach Monkey Island (third chapter), eventually you will need to catapult a rock with a 'primitive art' to hit a banana tree in the distance. Before you hit anything, SAVE your game and remember the slot.
For the first ending of the game, hit the banana tree, and then finish the game.
For the second ending, reload the save point and hit the ship and then finish the game.
Escape Artist - 10 points
Escaped from the monkey island cannibals hut 5 times.
When you get thrown into the 'prison' hut by the cannibals, there will be a skull on the floor. Lift it up and some loose floor boards and an escape tunnel will be revealed. Go through and you will find yourself outside the village.
Re-enter the village, head for the Big Stone Head and then try to leave the village. You will be stopped again by the cannibals and be thrown into prison again. Do this five times for the achievement.
RecordKeeper - 10 points
Collected all of the notes and memos sent between Herman Toothrot, LeChuck and the Cannibals
Once you get to Monkey Island there are memos to collect. There are actually nine memos, however some people have unlocked the achievement with eight (not counting the first one on the tree) I am listing all nine just to be safe.
1. On the tree when you start the chapter
2. Head north, then west to a beach (below the volcano)
3. Head to River Fork, and it is under a small flint rock
4. After you blow the dam, head to the pond at the end of the river. There will be a skeleton and a note.
5. When you first reach the 'primitive' rock catapult (after climbing footholds from River Fork) It is next to it.
6. After you have fired the primitive rock catapult, climb down and there will be a new note next to it.
7. On a beach, the one closest to Monkey Head clearing. It will be in a bottle.
8. On the beach when you land with your boat, heading to the cannibal village.
9. Inside the cannibals hut.
Human Cannonball - 10 points
Finished the entire game in record time. We hope you were wearing a helmet!
You need to finish the game under three hours The only you will be able to do this is to skip the cutscenes by holding down Y. Easier if you have played the game before otherwise best to use a walkthrough.
Determined - 10 points
Completed the game without using any hints.
If you press X anytime during the game, you will get a hint. Just DON'T ever push X and you will be fine.
