To combat piracy, the next generation Xbox 720 console is rumoured to require a constant online connection. It will also support Blu-Ray and have 2 GPUs. How exactly this "always-on internet" would work is anyone's guess?...
Microsoft has told third party developers to except a possible Christmas 2013 release. The details have come supposedly from a hastily removed tweet from a Crytek technical designer, who inadvertently let it slip while attending a "Durango" conference in London. Durango is the codename Microsoft are using for the next console. I personally cannot see a always-on-to-play model work or even be popular. It will most likely be shot down before it begins. The only effective way to combat piracy is to make the games cheap enough that no one will bother to pirate. Even brain surgeons know this.
