I have swapped drives and cleaned drives a number of times and you should not have anything to worry about as far as getting banned. I would however recommend trying to clean the drive first as you have to open the drive itself no matter what. All you need to clean the drive is a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. if the only problem is the reading error it is most likely a dirty lens. I am actually trying to make some good tutorial videos showing how to do this but I don't have it made yet. I'll try to find the best I could get to show you several fixes but be warned the video could be better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZu2-muJDJE Can't ever get these damn things to show up correctly so I'll just give you the link. I know this shows fixing issues with opening but it is a good idea to clean these other parts as well while you have it open. I can't remember if he showed it or not but the lens will be visible so just wipe it gently with a clean q-tip. Mine was having issues about two weeks ago opening and reading discs and doing this fixed it.

Yes i missed the thread
You can swap drives over but you have to observe 2 things 1) Drive type 2) Drive PCB The drive type has to be compatible with the original defective drive, and the drive PCB has to be interchangeable. The drive PCB is very important, as this contains a unique "Per Drive Key" which is only compatible with the "Key Vault" in the original console. When the console first boots, it checks that the drive attached to the system has the same "Per Drive Key" from when it was manufactured. Once you swap the drive PCB over the console will boot fine. Of course you can also swap lasers over if compatible from the original drive, but this is slightly more complicated and isn't as easy as PCB swap.
