ACHIEVEMENT GUIDE PT1

Pre-amble : I know it sounds long, but actually it is not that long, around 7 hours for the main quest line of Oblivion, 13 for the Guilds/Arena and 6 for the Shivering Isles, again depends on how you play.

I noticed there is no guide for this game, strange as Oblivion can actually be completed within 30 hours, or it can take over 100 hours, it just depends on if you are a Achievement Crawler or a Dungeon Crawler, like me, I have put in over 150+ hours in this game so far, and there are still lots of things I have not done, like all side quests, find all places and loot. Believe me, this game gives Borderlands a run for its money in loot, from enchanted weapons and armor, unique weapons and armor and other odds-and-ends around the world of Cyrodiil.

Something to help you on your way...

Rockmilk Cave, fast travel to Leyawiin, then head out and follow the road north, go past White Stallion Lodge, then past Water's Edge, now a cave should appear on your compass. It is a little off the road, nearly behind Water's Edge, this cave is related to a quest but you do not have to start the quest to enter. Sneak and keep in the shadows, you will hear fighting between Black Bow Bandits, Marauders and Bandits, they will fight between themselves unles you get seen, let them kill each other. These "Black Bows" weigh the same as a Iron Bow, do the same damage as a Silver Bow, has more health and worth more in gold. This is a good loot dungeon if you be careful.

Fort Nikel, fast travel to Chestnut Handy Stables and head across the big stone bridge, basicly head west, you will pass through the town of Weye, keep going west, when the road starts to head north a fort should appear on your compass. Sneak around the left side of the fort to a brick ledge, you should be able to sneak attack the enemy outside. Look north/northwest, you should see antoher brick ledge, jump up there anyway you can, to find a skeleton, but you will also find a Fine Steel Bow, Enchanted Arrows, Steel Arrows, a Scroll. If you know the "dupe trick" the arrows will come in handy. If you want to venture in, there are 7 enemies, one a little way past the entrance and 6 in the 'main area' waiting. Sneak attack one to start a fight, stay out-of-sight until they are finished, also there are 7 loot chests and 1 boss-level loot chest. Another good loot dungeon if you be careful.

Ring of Destruction, if you want to get this do it early, as it rolls away to a random spot on the bottom of Lake Rumare, finding it then is near impossible. Fast travel to the Imperial City Waterfront, turn around and up the stairs, down the other side into the water and head northwest, Fanacasecul (an Ayleid Ruin) will appear on your compass. This ruin is 'shaped like a U' with 2 piers out into the water, the smaller one on the right is the one you want, underwater is 2 rocks forming a 'crevice' where the ring should be. Move around and watch the 'cross-hairs' change to a 'hand' icon, the "dupe trick" again, worth a pretty penny. *IF* you want this, get it first and fast!

Lets get somethings out of the way first...

SAVE YOUR GAME BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE SEWERS FOR THE FIRST TIME. Because the game will give you the opportunity to change attributes and major Skills when you leave, so you can "tweak" your character if you want/need to after you have gone through the tutorial. Also, this can be used for a restart if anything goes wrong, this can also be used to go through some of the 'Faction' quests, like the Dark Brotherhood when you murder an innocent citizen, naturally some 'Factions' like the Mages Guild do not like you having bounties or you being a murderer. So you can just reload this save game and quickly do their line of quests needed for the Achievements without effecting any other 'Factions' in the game.

At lower levels, you will find some quests if not all are actually easier then at higher levels, sure the rewards and loot may not be as good, but easier to finish and do.

Difficulty has no effect on Achievements too, so go into Options and move the slider all the way to the left, go on, you know you want to...

When you are leveling up, try to put all your efforts into Strength, Agility and Endurance. Why? Strength affects how much you can carry, damage done with melee weapons. Agility affects damage done with bows and arrows, avoids being 'staggered' by enemy attacks. Endurance affects your health, how much you have and how much you increase when you level up. All 3 affect your Fatigue also. More information on leveling and how to efficiently later.

SAVE YOUR GAME OFTEN! There are a few bugs in this game that can stop your progess through some quests, do not rely on the autosave function.

Luckly, of thank god, this game has NO Achievements for places found, or levels, or people/creatures killed or locks picked like in Fallout 3, Oblivion has around 300 places to be found, you can get upto around level 50, usually you can get between level 48 - 52 without any trouble, depends on how you play and level (and things 'respawn' after a certain time, read below).

Dungeons 'respawn' every 3 ingame days, that is a few hours in real time for us, depends on how often you rest/sleep and wait, not sure of the exact number, 1 ingame day is about an hour or so real time, I did work it out once. This includes 'containers/chests' that have loot in them, gold, weapons and so on, the ones that were locked are relocked so you have to pick them again, only exemption to this is certain quest only containers/chests that contain a unique item.

Ok let me explain what I mean by 'Dungeons' now, you will not find any actual 'Dungeons' in Oblivion, but you will find 'Caves', 'Forts', 'Ayleid Ruins' and 'Mines'. These are referred to as 'Dungeons' due to the fact that you have to enter something that is dark, cold and gloomy, the 'atmosphere' kinda reminds me of the old castle dungeons where you are not quite sure what is around the corner (unless you have been down in the 'dungeon' a few times and know... lol).

Everything around you levels according to you, so enemies will get harder as you level up, new enemies appear in dungeons and in the wilderness, new weapons and armor become available, hence the reason why I said this game a easier at lower levels, instead of taking only 1 sneaky shot to kill a bandit it may take 4, the first sneaky shot does good damage but they have better armor. Example, lets say you go down into a dungeon, (Sideways Cave) that is right near the exit from the sewers when you first start, so you maybe level 2 - 3, there maybe a 'crab' along the shoreline and a basic 'Imp' outside (guarding) the door to the dungeon. AS you sneak (crawl) your way through, all you come across is 'Imps' and a few 'Rats' along the way. However, you go and do a few other things, like quests or explore other dungeons and think actually I have not been down there for a few (ingame) days now, I will go and have a look, you are now level 5 - 6, waiting outside is an 'Imp' so not too hard. But as you sneak through you come to a location and you see something that was not there last time, what the hell you think, instead of an 'Imp' being there you are now looking at a 'Troll' that is not looking that easy to kill as an 'Imp'. Even though I say this, enemies have weaknesses, some are immune to certain weapons, like 'Ghosts' and 'Will-o-the-Wisp' you have to use Silver or Daedric weapons, but you will not encounter these until you reach level 11 and level 6 respectively, Silver weapons can be found around level 4 - 5 on certain enemies and in loot containers/chests. Read the next bit.

This is the same for all dungeons, after a while you will get to know which ones are good for loot hunting and who carries what. The 'Human' enemies will carry a range of weapons depending on what level you are and what is made available by the game, so when you are level 1, Iron is everywhere (and holds true for the rest of the game) and Steel is rare until you reach level 2 - 3. When you reach level 4, Steel is now common, Silver is starting to appear, when you reach level 6, Silver is now common, Dwarven is starting to appear. When you reach level 9, Dwarven is now common, Elven is starting to appear, when you reach level 12, Elven is now common, Glass is starting to appear. when you reach level 16, Glass is now common, Ebony is starting to appear, finially, when you reach level 20, Ebony is now common, Daedric is starting to appear. Of course you can still find Silver and Steel from time to time, but why would you want it? Well actually there is a reason, explain in the leveling later.

The same can be said for Armor as well, it is a little different but depending on what level you are is what is available ingame and what the 'Human' enemies will have on them, there is Light Armor and Heavy Armor, when you are level 1, Fur and Iron is available, when you are level 3, Leather and Steel is available. When you are level 6, Chainmail and Dwarven is available, when you are level 10, Mithril and Orcish is available. When you are level 15, Elven and Ebony is available, finially when you are level 20, Glass and Daedric is available to find. Now, Bandits will always have Light Armor on them, Marauders will always have Heavy Armor on them, so depending on what you would rather is what dungeons to go crawling through every few ingame days to give yourself the best opportunity to be the best equipped for the level you currently are.

Magic/Enchanted items work by these rules too, you will not find an Enchanted Ebony Cuirass until you reach level 15, same as an Enchanted Glass Bow, not until you have reached level 12.

Merchants/Shop/Vendors will never stock the higher level items, like Ebony/Glass/Daedric Weapons and Elven/Ebony/Glass/Daedric Armor. you have to find these!

Ok, for all those Achievement crawlers, you can skip this bit if you want and go straight to the Achievement listing. This is where it gets dirty.

Leveling in Oblivion is one of the most time consuming things you can ever do, but it can also be quick and easy, as I said, depends on how you play the game, its not like Borderlands where you just keep killing things for experience then select a skill to increase, or like Fallout 3 that has the same type of thing, no this is Oblivion where everything you do can have an effect on you leveling efficiently to get the best possible level bonus. There are 8 Attributes, but only 7 govern Skills, so there are 21 Skills, 7 of these will become Major Skills, 14 will be Minor Skills (but still effect on leveling).

Attribute              Skills
Strength Blade/Blunt/Hand to Hand.
Endurance Armorer/Block/Heavy Armor.
Agility Marksman/Sneak/Security.
Speed Athletics/Acrobatics/Light Armor.
Personality Mercantile/Speechcraft/Illusion.
Intelligence Alchemy/Conjuration/Mysticism.
Willpower Alteration/Destruction/Restoration.
Luck NONE.

As you can see, Luck governs no Skills, but it has an effect on everything you do, like will that well placed arrow 'knock-down' or 'paralyze' the enemy you hit.

You level up by increasing your Major Skills, every 10 increases in a Major Skill or combination of Major Skills will result in you recieving a message like "rest and meditate on what you have learned" across the top of the screen. You have to find a bed and Rest, waiting does not work, when you wake a screen appears, you are to select 3 Attributes to increase. You may notice that some might have +1, +2, +3, +4 or +5 beside them, these are level bonuses I spoke about above, depending on how well you increased your Skills in the last level is what bonuses you get now. If you see any +5 this means you have increased the Skills that are governed by that Attribute 10 or more, efficiently you do not want to increase any 3 Skills that are governed by 1 Attribute more then 10 times, you do not recieve any higher bonus then +5 total.

Yeah, this is where you can get lost quickly, but think of it like this, if I increase Armorer 5 times, Block 3 times and Heavy Armor 2 times, that is 10 in total, these are governed by Endurance. Now if I increase Sneak 7 times, Marksman 5 times and Security 2 times, that is 14 in total, these are governed by Agility. If I were to level up now, I would see a +5 beside Agility and a +5 beside Endurance, even though I increased Skills governed by Agility 14 times, shouldn't that be +7 beside Agility? No, +5 is the highest, no matter HOW many Skills are increased in one level, so the other 4 are actually lost, they do not carry over to the next level either.

Make sense? Basicly what it comes down to, think what Attributes you want to increase first, then work on increasing the Skills governed by that Attribute.

Remember, if you increase a Major Skill or combination of Skills 10 times you will level up, this is where Minor Skills come into play, increase Minor Skills BEFORE you increase Major Skills.

Ok, my character is a War Wizard, Major Skills are Alchemy, Conjuration, Mysticism, Alteration, Destruction, Illusion and Blade. I want to increase Agility, Strength and Endurance quickly, so I increase a combination of (or 1 off alone) Marksman, Sneak and Security upto 10 times, then increase a combination of (or 1 off alone) Armorer, Block and Heavy Armor upto 10 times, I then increase Blade 10 time alone to tell me to level. When I wake, I get +5 beside Agility, Strength and Endurance, perfect.

However, I can only increase Blade so many times, so I change tactics for a level, I will upgrade Blunt and or Hand to Hand (Minor Skills), Marksman and or Sneak and or Security (Minor Skills), Alchemy and or Conjuration and or Mysticism (Major Skills for the level up). So I will do Intelligence for 1 level instead of Endurance, when I wake, I get +5 beside Agility, Strength and Intelligence, good enough for me, then I will go back to Endurance for the next level.

Yes, when I play Oblivion, I have a piece of paper and pencil next to me to keep count of what Skills I increase so I do not mess anything up, if you need any help or anything do not hesitate to ask, I will help best I can. CONTINUED NEXT TAB >

There are 3 matches for each rank, some have more then 1 opponent, some rules:

You must wear your Heavy or Light Raiment (Armor) issued to you by Owyn.

You cannot scavenge the corpses of your foes.

You can only fight from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M.

You can use any weapon or cast any spell within your matches.

Of course these rules do not affect the Grand Champion. Also, if you have completed the quest Origin of the Gray Prince and informs Agronak (the Champion) of his "bloodline", he will become nearly suicidal and simply stand still during the match, allowing the player to attack him with no retaliation. This is considered murder, good way to enter the Dark Brotherhood.

DARK BROTHERHOOD

Murderer, Dark Brotherhood - 10 points

Join the Dark Brotherhood

Easy, well actually not that easy, do you really want to murder someone? You you must murder an innocent citizen, after killing a citizen, whether or not you were detected, a message will appear saying, "Your killing has been observed by forces unknown...." The next time you sleep in a "safe location", like your house, a message will appear saying, "The air grows chill and a shadow approaches...." You will then be woken by Lucien Lachance, a Speaker of the Dark Brotherhood. He will offer you membership and describe what you must do to be accepted.

Speaker, Dark Brotherhood - 10 points

Reached Speaker rank in the Dark Brotherhood

See the Listener, Dark Brotherhood Achievement.

Listener, Dark Brotherhood - 50 points

Completed the Dark Brotherhood Questline

There are 19 Quests in all that must be completed to be promoted to Listener, there are a few other "non-contract" Quests, like one to accept an offer to become a vampire if you really wish, as I said above, you will never get any good "Fame" from the Dark Brotherhood or the Thieves Guild Quests, so doing these together is a good option, loading that saved game before you exited the sewers is a great idea so there are no "problems" with the other Guilds.

If you have the Game of the Year Edition or have downloaded the Shivering Isles expansion then these are up for grabs as well.

Tourist, Shivering Isles - 20 points

Entered the Shivering Isles

As soon as you install Shivering Isles, you will get a message about a "strange door" opening, head to it, its near Bravil. When you enter, a small room is all you see, speak with Haskill, he explains that Sheogorath is looking for a champion amongst mortals, someone with the strength of mind and body to help Sheogorath with an upcoming cataclysm, and extends this offer to you. Accept his offer, suddenly the room disappears, you are inside the Fringe.

See the Madgod, Shivering Isles Achievement.

Madgod, Shivering Isles - 50 points

Stopped the Greymarch

There are (possibly) 18 Quests in all that must be completed to stop the Greymarch, now when you do the "Ritual of Accession" quest, you have to choose one of the two possible Duchy you wish to rule. Choosing Mania requires killing Thadon, initiating the Ritual of Mania, while choosing Dementia means killing Syl, initiating the Ritual of Dementia. You can only complete one of the two quests.

Otherwise you will have to create a new character, return to Shivering Isles and redo the main quest line to unlock the other Achievement.

That's it, I know it sounds long, but actually it is not that long, around 7 hours for the main quest line of Oblivion, 13 for the Guilds/Arena and 6 for the Shivering Isles, again depends on how you play.

Go to the Talos Plaza District in Imperial City. Facing the Tiber Septim Hotel, go left under the archway. Immediately to your left again is a door. The door belongs to a NPC named Dorian. He is normally in most nights, but you will have to pick the lock. Once you have entered through the door, save your game.

You will find Dorian and you have to kill him quickly, otherwise guards will be alerted and you will be arrested. If you have trouble killing him, push Start , select Options and change the Difficulty slider to Easy. Once you have killed him, loot his body for gold. He has an never ending supply. Do NOT push "X" to Take All or the game will freeze. Just highlight his gold and push "A" couple of million times, or however greedy you get. You can return later, for more, but his body disappears after a few days.

Note, if this is your first ever murder, you will be visited by the Dark Brotherhood next time you awake from sleep!

Kvatch Infinite Money Glitch

Another Infinite Money glitch is to first equip a weapon. You have to have it equipped, so you can see it. Then jump on a horse and and head for the camp just south of the town of Kvatch.

You must STAY on the horse and talk to a female Orc merchant (she is green) named Batul gra-Sharob. Choose to Barter with her and choose your Equipped Weapon. She will pay you gold for it, but the item remains in your inventory. Just keep selling it to her until you get enough bills to buy Cyrodiil.

Duplicate Items Using Arrows

This glitch lets you create multiple copies of an item in your inventory. First you need a stack of arrows already in your inventory and the item you wish to duplicate, should be a non-quest item i.e it can be dropped from the inventory.

Equip the arrows.

Perform an attack like swinging a blade or casting a spell.

While attacking, QUICKLY enter your journal.

Press "A" to unequip the arrows ( do not press "X" to drop)

You should get the message " You cannot change weapons while attacking" If you do not get this message, try again.

Now Select the item you wish to duplicate, Press "X" to drop.

Leave the Journal.

At your feet, there will been many duplicates of the item dropped as there were arrows in your inventory. You can duplicate magic or expensive items to sell as well!

Increase Alteration Glitch

Need to increase your alteration skill so you can cast some nasty Alteration Spells? It's a shame having all the money in Cyrodiil, you can't just buy skills. You can afford all these spells like, "Enemies Explode" but you can't cast them because your skill level is low. This glitch can help you increase it to 100 just by casting it on a door!

There is a house in Anvil that you can buy when you start "Where Spirits Have Lease" quest. Go to the Count's Arms between noon to midnight. Talk to a dude called Velwyn Benirus and he will sell you his granddaddy's house for 5000 gold.

The house is in the north-east corner of town. Go down to the basement and there is hidden room that only a family member of Benirus can open. Attempt to cast any spells that "unlock doors" on the portal on the wall. It will never open , but your alteration will increase.

BEAT ENEMIES & BOSSES EASY!

Now that you have got a ton of benjamins, you can buy some amazing weapons to easily beat enemies and bosses. Spells are a little trickier, because you have to be a certain level to use them.

My suggestion is to go buy the Apothesis Staff at Rindir's Staff in the Imperial City Market District. This Staff is awesome and can totally wipe out a lot of enemies above your level. It only has a limited amount of charges, but being a Cyrodiil Billionaire that you are now, just pay a mage in any Mages Guild to recharge it for you.

If you want the most powerful sword in Oblivion, you need to get the Umbra Sword. It is part of a quest, but you do not need to do the quest to get it.  With the Update removed, this quest is bugged anyway, and not related  to any achievements. The game crashes if you try to complete the quest.

You will need to kill a level 50 ( yeah, way higher than you) NPC named Umbra. But with the Apothesis Staff in your greedy little hands , this battle is way too easy. She is located in an elven ruin called Vindasel. It is on the road from Imperial City to Bravil, between Fort Virtue and Old Bridge. Enter the ruin, and she is at the very back. Four strikes with Apothesis Staff and she is toast.

Once you kill her, loot her body for the Umbra sword. Now this longsword is totally awesome. It has a Soul Trap for 120 secs and slices enemies effortlessly. It also has a double bonus, that being part of a open quest, it remains weightless. Sweet. Unless of course you want to complete the quest, you will need to give it some dude, but why would you want to do that ?
