EA Shutdown More Servers

The slaughter doesn't end at EA as they continue to shutdown more game servers. Among the titles for March 16 cull are Lord of The Rings Conquest, Def Jam, Godfather and unbelievably The Simpsons..

I say unbelievably for The Simpsons as I didn't realize the game had a online community. As for Lord of The Rings Conquest, the game was only released in January last year and now you have just under a month to organize a boosting session to clean up those rank achievements.  Otherwise gone forever your chance to earn them. What do you think? Are EA making achievements extinct too easily? Should they compensate online achievements somehow?

Games for Service Shutdown March 16, 2010.

Def Jam
Lord Of The Rings Conquest
The Godfather
The Simpsons

This is just getting ridiculous. What the hell is going on? Is EA about to shutdown or something? Maybe they just don't realize how many people enjoy the achievements, or better yet they plan on just giving them out soon.
  • trippster1  - why dont they
why dont they just shut down all servers temporarily instead of shutting down several forever?
  • trippster1
if they shutdown my burnout paradise ill be so mad. theyre shutting down burnout 3
  • Misplaced1BRAIN  - the SHUTDOwnnnnnnnn...........
gee, maybe EA felt like they got slapped hard when they heard that 'NATAL' may not be headed towards a game that they were delevoping as well. (read earlier article, "Fable III Will Have Less Natal" ).
  • MMMMMMMMMMMMEH
I used to love EA but at this rate my love affair with them will soon be over..
  • YouStayCla55y  - This only affects LOTR & Def Jam
The Godfather and the Simpsons ones aren't linked to achievements, just worthless leaderboard crap.
  • Roach
I'm interested to see if they're gonna compensate for the inability to be able to gain these achievements after said date. How could they do this if they were going to anywhos?!
  • KRS  - Just let MS handle it
If EA is concerned with the amount of $ and resources it takes to run these servers, why not just let Microsoft host the games like pretty much every other publisher does. I am sure that is not free, but at least they wouldn't be pissing off gamers every few months.

LOTR: Conquest has only been out for a year! And isn't the game all multiplayer anyway? I can understand closing down older games, but a year is redonkulous.
  • YouStayCla55y
@Roach: they haven't for the other 99% games servers they shut down, so I wouldn't hold your breath they will with this one.

@KRS: and as much as I hate to say it, to be fair EA not longer has the LOTR license so spending money to keep something going they don't even own unfortunately makes sense.
  • Metal X76  - Whew
I'm glad I finally got the last cheeve frodo/ring achievement a few weeks ago. That was a pain.
What about gamers like me, I can't run out and grab brand new games so I rummage thru cheapy bins and grab older titles for less than 10 bucks. Strangely alot of 'em are ea titles. So I guess grab 'em when there hot or avoid em I guess.
I know the servers cost money and peoples time to maintain so from a business sense keeping servers going for a game that has 20 loyal followers doesn't make sense.
  • YouStayCla55y  - Geez I cannot write to save my life
    Let's try that again:

@KRS: and as much as I hate to say it... to be fair EA no longer has the LOTR license so spending money to keep something going they don't even own is rather silly on their part so they're pretty justified in closing down those servers.

I really wish they would re open annually or something cos i would love the 40g achieement on nba 068
  • KRS  - LOTR license
I did not consider the licensing issue with LOTR. But again, if MS were hosting the servers, it would/could remain up and running.

I don't understand what EA stands to gain from running their own servers. A collection of e-mail addresses?
  • YouStayCla55y
    @KRS

I've often wondered that myself, since they always ask if they can share your email with partners. Maybe they get a cut of that action or something?

I think the server thing goes back to the days of the original Xbox when EA had to have completely separate servers than Microsoft's, EA just can't completely let that go. Dunno.
  • C-LOVE16  - EA SERVERS SUCK
THE EA SERVERS SUCK NE WAY, LAG ISSUES GETTING SIGNED OUT ALL THE TIME IN NHL 10 SUCKS BALLS EA, U MAKE AMAZING SPORTS GAMES BUT CUZ OF UR SERVER I GET SIGNED OUT HERE AND THERE, DAILY THO, IT MAKES NO SENSE THAT ON ANY OTHER GAME I PLAY ONLINE ON PS3 OR XBOX I HAVE NO LAG AT ALL SO EA PLZ GET BETTER SERVERS OR DONT HAVE NE AT ALL
